White Wizzard curse strikes again

White Wizzard have lost their sixth frontman in as many years after Michael Joseph was fired hours before the band played in Wales at the weekend.

In a series of fraught online exchanges mainman Jon Leon accused Joseph of having refused to perform the show at Bogiez in Cardiff, preferring to drink in a bar near the venue.

But the singer lashed back, saying Leon had been acting “like a child” on the road, and had not honoured promises made before they began the tour.

Fans were left unsure about whether to believe the posts on White Wizzard’s Facebook page following recent unofficial posts that claimed Leon had quit the band to become a Scientologist.

On Saturday afternoon the NWOBHM-powered outfit announced: “Hey all, our singer is drunk in a pub somewhere in Wales when he is supposed to be on stage. If you see him tell him to get to the venue Bogiez ASAP!”

The show went ahead with Leon singing some songs, while former vocalist Peter Ellis, whose own band Monument are part of the tour, helped with other songs.

White Wizzard said: “Joseph Michael decided to blow off a huge crowd and sit on a bar stool. So Jon and Peter Ellis got up and brought the house down. What an amazing show.”

The band later appealed for a replacement singer to perform the rest of their European tour in support of their latest album The Devil’s Cut. On Sunday they reported they’d secured the services of Giles Lavery, known for his work with Warlord.

Michael posted his own explanation of events on Facebook, saying: “Jon has been stealing money from us and I called him out on it. He fired me then announced that I was refusing to sing. It’s all lies.

“Jon Leon is a con man and has not honoured one word he has said since I joined this band. After I sang on Devil’s Cut he threatened to forbid Earache Records from releasing it if I didn’t sign a new contract giving me no rights and a far worse deal.

“Jon Leon has paid for nothing on this trip and has acted a child the whole time.”

After many fans asked questions about the location of items purchased as part of an Indiegogo funding campaign, Leon posted: “Rest assured, everyone shall get what they ordered plus something extra for the wait. Do not believe any claims otherwise.

“Joseph is making very false and erroneous claims about Jon and the band, but without getting into a war of words we will just say he is lying to cover up his very unprofessional actions.”

Last night White Wizzard directed fans to a post from a woman who claimed Joseph had stolen the contents of her bag after it was accidentally packed wrong with their gear.

Leon, the only remaining original member, formed the band in 2007. Lavery is their seventh frontman, with Wyatt Anderson having served two stints. They’re currently on their seventh guitarist and third drummer. Original line-up members James-Paul Luna, James LaRue and Tyler Meahl formed Holy Grail in 2008 after splitting with Leon.
