Mr. Lombardo
What with your contract woes with Slayer, it seems you are now no longer a member. Well, Dave, they say with every door that closes, another opens. A big door with our logo on it has just swung wide.
That's right, you just got called up to the big leagues. We'd like to invite you to drum for Lich King.
We are the world's premier unsigned western Massachusetts thrash metal band, and a position with us carries a great deal of clout and privilege. In addition to the twelve dollars we can give you out of our pay split after EVERY SHOW, we are willing to offer you a signing bonus of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS and one (1) gift certificate for $20 at Red Robin.
Your duties will include
• Drumming
• Hauling gear
• Driving long hours on tour
• Providing us with a practice space because ours belongs to our current drummer Brian
• Booking tours (also a Brian duty)
• Doing the band accounting (another Brian job)
• Recording and producing our albums (Brian again)
• Telling Brian he's fired
If you accept, there will of course be an audition. We can't just let you in without seeing what you can do. Practice up on any three of our songs. We can send you the mp3s to practice to (we will deduct the 99 cents per song from your future earnings) and can schedule your audition at your convenience.
We await your response.
Cordially
-Tom, Dave, Joe & Rob

On the progress of the songwriting sessions for the new SLAYER album:
Kerry: "I've got 11 songs done. I don't know who's gonna do 'em — I don't know who's gonna produce it, I don't know who's gonna play it. I think METALLICA's got [producer Greg Fidelman] monopolized. He had February open and I was hoping to get some work done in February and then February just got too busy for us. I don't know. If he gets another window, I would like to do it between Australia and Europe in June. That would be great — just be done with it, and it could get mixed while I am out on tour and be out in September or October. That's the perfect world, so we'll see."
"Two [new songs] are done; we recorded two last year with Greg Fidelman, and they just never got mixed. The're done — there are vocals, leads; they are done. And they were gonna put 'em out before [our appearance at the Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem [Festival] last year. But that never got done, so I said, 'Why waste 'em on an EP for nothing? [Let's] save them for the record.' Those two are done. The nine others I've just gotta teach whoever's gonna play 'em, and they're ready to go."
"I've been working on the new maerial a lot, and I worked on it a lot with [SLAYER drummer] Dave [Lombardo]. So I haven't decided — if we move on [without Dave] — I haven't decided if I play the new guy what we've done or just play him the guitar stuff that I made up and say, 'What do you think?' 'Cause I know what I want to be there, and I can tell him if it's going in the wrong direction. 'Nah, you've gotta play this.' I haven't even thought this far yet."
On drummer Dave Lombardo's current status with SLAYER:
Kerry: "This just happened a week ago… ten days ago… so I mean, I don't know… It's unfortunate that Dave couldn't be with us; I planned on him being here up until the Monday before I left. And then I saw trouble in paradise, and since I am the mastermind on making decisions like this, I was, like, 'Alright, I've got a backup plan. Just in case.' 'Cause I would have hated to have just Australia blown out. Can you imagine how shitty that would have been? So I did what I thought was best, and we pulled it off."
On whether he saw the dispute with Dave coming:
Kerry: "Tom [Araya, SLAYER bassist/vocalist] did. Tom's been on the fence about Dave for awhile and I was pretty much the one that said, 'Nah, I'm not comfortable moving on [without Dave].' And then it got thrust in our face and I took action immediately and I got a very lucky culmination of things that happened.

Jon Dette won’t comment on the possibility that he could rejoin Slayer full time after the band dropped drummer Dave Lombardo for their Australian tour.
But the stand-in sticksman admits he’s enjoyed his stint with his former colleagues – and they appear to have enjoyed it too.
Founding member Lombardo was replaced at short notice by guitarist Kerry King after raising concerns over the thrash giants’ business model. No word has been given on the chances of him getting back behind the kit – although King has said frontman Tom Araya has had doubts for some time.
Dette – who played drums in the mid-90s between Paul Bostaph’s two stints before Lombardo’s return – tells HeavyMag: “It’s baby steps right now.
“I think it would be too early for me to make a comment like that at this time. But all I can tell you is that we’re having a great time. It feels great on stage and everybody that’s actually at the shows and seen the shows – not just the fans, but even the crew on the side of the stage – all have smiles on their faces. I must be doing something right; and I guess we’ll see what the future brings.”
But he accepts fans have good reason to be upset over the sudden lineup change. “Lombardo has been such an integral part of Slayer and it’s only natural,” he says. “I’m a Slayer fan first. I paused a little bit when I heard the news.
“But you’re never going to please everyone. The only thing I can do is give it the integrity that the music deserves; then I feel I’ve done my job. If the fans accept it, then they accept it. If they don’t, they don’t – but that’s out of my control.”
Dette faced a schedule headache when he accepted the Slayer role, because he was already standing in for Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante on the same Soundwave touring festival.
“I was asking myself, ‘How I am going to be able to do this? Iis it logistically possible?’ I didn’t know if Anthrax was going to be on one completely different area. Once I found out that logistically we could make it work I think that’s what put me at ease the most.
“It’s definitely a physical challenge, but it was one that I attacked with a smile on my face. I was looking forward to it.”
Slayer are currently touring with only two full-time members – Exodus guitarist Gary Holt remains in place of Jeff Hanneman, who’s still recovering from a near-fatal spider bite sustained in 2011. |

Ouais, et il y a peu de chance pour que Hanneman revienne...

Slayer could move on without Hanneman
Slayer’s Kerry King has hinted the band could move on without Jeff Hanneman, who’s been sidelined for two years after sustaining a near-fatal spider bite.
The guitarists haven’t spoken to each other in some time, leading King to wonder whether Hanneman has any intention of rejoining the thrash giants. With two songs underway for their next album, King reveals he’d be comfortable with stand-in man Gary Holt of Exodus making his presence more permanent.
That could leave Slayer facing the future with just two founding members remaining after they dropped drummer Dave Lombardo for their Australian tour following a contractual dispute. Temporary replacement Jon Dette has already discussed the chances of his return becoming a full-time commitment.
King tells Metal Obsession: “I don’t have an update – I haven’t seen Jeff in forever. He’s always been a recluse, and he’s even been more of a recluse since he’s not going on tour with us. Our manager talks to him from time to time and sees him in LA just randomly. But I’m far from LA, so I’m not in that loop.”
Hanneman could be on the road with Slayer if he wanted to be, King suggests. “He can do anything in life – he could be hanging here having a good time with us.” But he accepts a full-power show might not be forthcoming: “He can probably play South Of Heaven, but he’s not gonna be playing Jihad, you know what I mean?”
The band plan to mix the tracks they’ve already recorded then continue with work on the rest of the album over the summer – and King believes it could easily be completed without Hanneman’s input. “It’s just all my stuff for now,” he says. “I did that just in case; I don’t know what Jeff’s intentions are. So I wanted to have Slayer covered in case he doesn’t come to the party. If he comes to the party, then we’ve got tons of songs.”
Meanwhile, if Holt’s position were to become permanent, that wouldn’t present a problem. “I think Gary is in for the long haul,” says King. “I haven’t really discussed it with him. But he keeps his schedule free when he knows we’re on tour.
“If Jeff all of a sudden came back in June, we would probably pay Gary for freeing up his time. I don’t wanna treat somebody that’s bailed us out for two years badly. But if Gary played with us for ever? I’m okay with that.”
The door remains open for Hanneman, however. “If Jeff got better and said, ‘Hey, man, I’m ready to play,’ and he came to rehearsal and showed us he was good enough, that’s his show.” |
