"Musically, I'm sitting on roughly 14 tunes that we can pick from and I've finished seven of those lyrically. I'm way ahead of the game compared to where I was for 'World Painted Blood' [the band's 2009 album]."

Regarding how the new SLAYER material is shaping up and whether fans can expect any surprises on the next album, Kerry said: "Fans don't want you to change.

"How many fans do you think METALLICA pissed off when they did 'Load' and 'Reload'?
People like SLAYER because it's SLAYER. You grow as a musician within your genre, not try and flip genres and become something else."

In a recent interview with LA Weekly, King commented on the possibility of SLAYER's next album featuring previously unused material that was written by Hanneman prior to his death.

"There's been musicians historically that passed on and had a lot of stuff put out that was unreleased during their lives," he said. "But most of it was unreleased for a reason. I don't want the last thing for people to hear from Jeff be mediocre."

Araya semble plus humain:
Citation:
Slayer: ‘We need to sit down and talk about the future – if we HAVE a future’

Tom Araya reveals talks with Kerry King planned for end of current tour: “Jeff Hanneman’s death has changed everything.”

Tom Araya has revealed that the future of Slayer is uncertain following the death of guitarist Jeff Hanneman – and will remain so until he and bandmate Kerry King sit down and evaluate the way forward at the end of their current tour.

Araya: “At the end of this tour, Kerry and I are going to have to sit down and talk as far as how we want to move forward, if we want to move forward. There hasn’t been time for me and Kerry to talk.

“We’ve been on the road but we haven’t really sat down and talked about it. Jeff and I collaborated a lot, and he offered me the opportunity to write or to collaborate with him. Like I said, there are things we have to discuss to either move forward or just to figure something out.”

Talking to Steppin’ Out magazine, Araya admits the band hadn’t considered Jeff Hanneman might not make it, with the band convinced he was on the road to recovery.

The late Slayer guitarist died in May this year and Araya says his death has “changed everything”.

“Nobody ever thought about Jeff passing away. I thought about him getting better and getting back on stage. We’ve been talking about getting back in the studio for the last two years, with Jeff being a part of that. It was something to be continued.

“His death has changed everything. Knowing that Jeff was on the sidelines, I was okay. It was always about, ‘Jeff is going to come back.’ Then he passed away and it was more like, ‘Why am I doing this now?’ It changed my attitude about some things. Someone said: ‘It’s really great that you decided to tour and move on,’ but these tours were scheduled in advance.”

With Hanneman’s passing so recent, hitting the road again means the band are faced with constant reminders of their former bandmate.

He adds: “It is hard. We toured Europe and South America. It got easier, but the first two weeks were rough. The first part of the set was great, the excitement and the roar of the crowd gets you going, but then toward the end of the set it all starts hitting you. And to top it off we had the backdrop with the Heineken logo with Hanneman’s name on it come down for the last two songs, South Of Heaven and Angel Of Death.

“That didn’t make it any easier at all. The first week or so, I had a tough time trying to sing without losing it. We did two tours in Europe and one in South America. I’m better now, but it’s different. But still, even though I feel the way I feel, I give more than a hundred per cent. The show is great.”

Kerry King is a Sensitive Poet

During a recent interview with Full Metal Jackie, Kerry King was asked if Jeff Hanneman’s “style and what he brought to the band [will] continue to influence Slayer’s legacy.” Which, with all do respect to FMJ, is kind of a silly question; I mean, it’s not as though King were gonna go “Jeff who? Oh, the blonde dude? Nahhhhh.” Of COURSE Hanneman’s style will continue to influence Slayer’s legacy.

Still, King could have been a little more sentimental in his answer:

Citation:
“My brother my blood Jeff was a unique and special snowflake, and I will love him ’til the day I die.”

No, totally kidding. What he actually said was:

Citation:
“But, you know, we’ve been together so long that we kind of infused ourselves into each other. So I think it’s going to be business as usual going forward, [but] just one member less, which sucks for everybody.”

Blink

Confused

lol

De la même interview :

Citation:
Full Metal Jackie: Did you ever question the future of the band?

King: I haven't. I'm one of the people that was always of the opinion that if me or Tom [Araya, bass/vocals] or Jeff wasn't in the band, then it probably shouldn't be [called] SLAYER. But I was always thinking if somebody quit rather than if somebody died. It's a little different for me, because now, I've got my songwriting partner taken away from me; it's not like he left. And I'm still in a place where I've gotta work. And I don't want a new job; I like my job. [laughs]

Dans la version originale, le personnage dit "But I was always thinking if somebody quit rather than if somebody died. It's a little different"

KK a écrit:
On SLAYER's early years:

King: "Me and [late SLAYER guitarist] Jeff [Hanneman] would go hang out and see bands. We saw METALLICA at the Woodstock in Orange County, of all places, and we were blown away. We were already into MOTÖRHEAD and VENOM, and there was a lot of talk of the METALLICA guys. So we were, like, 'Let's go check this out.' And they were doing what we were doing the way we wanted to do it… We just weren't there yet. They were probably six to eight to twelve months ahead of us, just with shit-togetheredness. Even back then, I look at [then-METALLICA guitarist] Dave Mustaine, and to this day, I love him as a guitar player; he's one of my favorites. And then I saw him playing and it just blew me and Jeff away that he was just ripping solos and he wasn't even looking at what he was playing. And we were just like, 'Man, that's awesome.' And were just into it. Me and Jeff were six months apart in age. We were just like the same person."

On SLAYER's recent split with original drummer Dave Lombardo:

King: "When Dave was in [the band] this last time, I figured I'd be on the stage with him until one of us fell off the stage, dead. Things change. He got some bad advice and listened to some bad advice, gave us an ultimatum ten days before we went to Australia [to do the Soundwave festival tour]. And I said, 'I can't have this over my head.' And I feel bad for Dave to this day; I really feel bad for him because he shot himself in the foot. Maybe he thought he had the upper hand, but you ain't gonna get me…. Before I got home, I knew exactly what I was going to do for Australia."

On how SLAYER has managed to maintain its camaraderie within the band for more than 30 years:

King: "The only thing that we've done to separate each other purposely is when Tom [Araya, SLAYER bassist/vocalist] started coming out with his family, I don't know, maybe ten or so years ago. And I said, 'It's probably a good idea to get your own bus.' Because you never know what's gonna be going on on our bus. For the band, kids keeping you awake all night — if that's what would happen; kids stumbling in on something they really don't need to see, that's something. But that's the only thing. We fly together, we're still on the same bus. We take off on the same bus in a few days. [Editor's note: The interview was conducted a few days prior to the start of SLAYER's current North American tour.]

"What took me the longest time to figure out for myself personally was what not to say to people. You have your opinion, someone is pissing you off that day? You don't need to say it. Shut up, get on with your day, tomorrow's a new day and it's all gonna be fine. And, you know, there are so many bands that break up, and the individual doesn't usually have the talent of the whole.

"We're good at what we do, we've got a very strong brand, a very strong following and it would be stupid [for us to call it quits].

"The only reason I would leave SLAYER today is if Tom said he was done, 'cause then it's just me. Or if I was done and it was just Tom, I don't think Tom would wanna do it. It's now just the two of us."

Well, this is certainly a landmark occasion: according to a new set of interviews Fuse has conducted with Slayer’s Tom Araya, Kerry King, and Paul Bostaph, the band is currently without a label — meaning they’ve severed ties with Rick Rubin, co-founder of American Recordings (formerly Def Jam), after nearly thirty years.

And the craziest part is, it would appear that the split wasn’t Slayer’s decision! “I asked our manager to reach out to him,” Araya says in the segment, “but [we got] no response or reply. Yeah, so that’s kinda sad.”

Indeed: according to Slayer scholar (and MetalSucks contributor) D.X. Ferris’ amazing book about Reign in Blood*, in 1985, Rubin went after Slayer HARD, and it took a lot of wheeling and dealing to get the band onto the label (they were on Metal Blade at the time). Of course, not only did the band eventually sign with Def Jam (traditionally known as a hip-hop label up ’til that point!), but Rubin went on to co-produce the band’s Unholy Trinity of Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss (and “executive produce” many of their other albums, whatever that means).

And not only did Rubin have a profound impact on Slayer’s career, but vice versa as well: Working with Slayer “helped change the perception from me being viewed as a hip-hop producer to that of a music producer,” Ferris quotes Rubin as saying.

So, yeah. This is definitely the end of an era.

The band apparently hopes to be signed soon; I’m sure ever A&R dude in metal is chasing them right now

In a recent interview with Fuse, Kerry King and Tom Araya revealed that he band is no longer signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings (formerly Def Jam), and Araya went so far as to make it sound as though Rubin wasn’t returning the phone calls of Slayer’s manager, Rick Sales. In response, Sales has now released a statement clarifying the comments in that interview:

“With Jeff’s tragic passing and Slayer’s eventual hectic touring schedule over the past several months, there has been a bit of mutual ‘holding off ‘ on jumping into any new long term recording commitment, but we would like to clarify the comments that Tom and Kerry made in the Fuse interview. It is true that Slayer is currently out of contract, as they delivered their final required album to American Recordings some time ago. Rick Rubin began a new distribution agreement with Universal last year and American/Universal absolutely has made a significant proposal to re-sign the band. Both parties had been in substantial negotiation over that proposal at the time of Jeff’s passing; and in fairness to everyone, a little space has been given on all sides in terms of closing any new deal. We are excited about the possibility of re-signing with Rick Rubin’s venture, and are also considering several other options that have been presented since the previous long term contract with American expired. The band has been taking much needed time to regroup and consider their various options for the future, and looks forward to a new beginning, wherever that may be.”
