Queensryche drama ‘good for business’
Geoff Tate says the drama surrounding Queensryche has been good for business.
Two versions of the band are currently in existence after the original outfit fired him last year, and a court ruled both parties were free to use the name until a final hearing in November.
The vocalist put his own lineup together and released the album Frequency Unknown, while Scott Rockenfield, Michael Wilton and Eddie Jackson hired Todd La Torre and launched a self-titled record.
Tate tells The Classic Metal Show: “What we’re doing in November is, we’re dissolving our corporation. It has nothing to do with music – it has nothing to do with ‘he said, she said;’ it’s just paying off the members of the corporation.
“Who has the money to buy it will buy it. Whoever has the most money will get it. It’s as simple as that. It’s rules and regulations – it’s a paint-by-numbers kind of thing.”
He insists that, since music has nothing to do with those legal matters, the media controversies have no value whatsoever – except for one thing.
“All it did was create publicity, which Queensryche hasn’t had in years,” he says. “And I’ve gotta tell you, Gene Simmons was right: any publicity is good publicity.
“We’ve had more sellouts on this Queensryche run that I’ve done than Queensryche has had in ten years.”
Tate was recently hammered by criticism when he was seen grabbing a fan’s phone from a crowd then throwing it into the audience. But he says it’s no big deal – and that he and the phone’s owner laughed about it after the show.
“I grabbed the guy’s phone, took a picture and tossed it back to him – but he missed it because the lights were in his eyes,” says the singer.
“He was in our meet-and-greet after the show and we were laughing about it. I said, ‘Oh, man, I’m sorry; did your phone get damaged?’ He said, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ We were happy and we had drinks backstage.
“In the frenzy of a concert there’s all kind of activity that happens with the front row. It’s rough, it’s chaotic, it’s intense.”

Ils se seraient mis d'accord.

In what appears to be a preview of the upcoming settlement announcement over the rights to the QUEENSRŸCHE name, singer Geoff Tate's QUEENSRŸCHE webpage has changed. It no longer says "QUEENSRŸCHE" at the top and now features a banner with the words "Geoff Tate: The Voice Of QUEENSRŸCHE." In addition, there is a link to "QUEENSRŸCHE Without Geoff Tate" which points to QueensrycheOfficial.com, the official webpage of the Todd La Torre-fronted version of the band.
QUEENSRŸCHE guitarist Michael Wilton recently confirmed that Tate — who was fired from the Seattle progressive rock band in 2012 after fronting it for three decades — and his former bandmates have reached a settlement in their legal battle over the rights to the group's name.
Speaking to the Allentown Music Examiner, Wilton was asked when fans can expect a resolution of the legal case involving the two versions of QUEENSRŸCHE. "That's coming up," Wilton said. "What I can say is that both sides have reached an amicable settlement and it's now just a matter of time. There will be an official press release, but for now, you'll have to wait." |

On the very day his farewell tour as QUEENSRŸCHE begins, Geoff Tate — one of rock's quintessential front men and the lead vocalist heard on all QUEENSRŸCHE hits since the inception of the band — has announced that his current version of QUEENSRŸCHE will forge ahead as OPERATION: MINDCRIME after the tour ends.
Named after QUEENSRŸCHE's epic concept album from 1988, "Operation: Mindcrime" — a band consisting of Geoff Tate, Rudy Sarzo (OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE), Simon Wright (AC/DC, DIO), Randy Gane (MYTH) and Kelly Gray (QUEENSRYCHE 1998 - 2001, 2012 - present) — will enter the studio in September to begin recording a trilogy project that Geoff's been working on for the past two years.
Tate, who has always enjoyed telling stories through music, considers the creation of the forthcoming trilogy one of his biggest and most ambitious works to date.
"I tried to reduce the story and eventually got it down to 37 ideas that needed representing to complete the story," comments Geoff. "I knew that one record wouldn't cover it and that it would have to be a trilogy. It's an exciting project and one we'd like to release the first part of sometime next spring."
With the evolution of his band, Geof would like to concentrate on concept and story albums in the years to come. Fans like to call it, "Thinking Man's Metal" and Geoff plans to continue expanding the musical dimensions of your mind.
"It doesn't seem that long ago when I first brought the 'Mindcrime' story to the band… they were, initially, against it. Chris DeGarmo was the first one to get on board and, once he did, we were able to move forward with what became one of our greatest achievements as a band."
